Is anything lost when a BMP is converted to another lossless format?

No pixel data. BMP stores the image exactly rather than approximating it, so a conversion between two lossless formats is reversible and can be repeated indefinitely without degradation. What can be lost is everything around the pixels — colour profiles, transparency, animation, embedded metadata — because support for those varies far more between formats than the pixel storage does. BMP usually stores completely uncompressed pixel rows with a small header, which is why it is so simple to parse.
Why do screenshots come out as BMP?

Because a screenshot is the one image type this format is unambiguously best at. What is on screen is flat colour, text and hard edges — exactly the content lossless compression handles well and a photographic encoder smears — and the operating system knows it, so it does not offer you a choice. Converting a screenshot to a photographic format almost always makes it both larger and worse. BMP needs no decoder library at all, so it remains the safe interchange format for embedded systems and legacy Windows tooling.
Why is my BMP so much larger than the same photo as a JPG?

Because it is keeping every pixel, and in a photograph almost no two pixels are the same. Lossless compression works by finding repetition, and grain, noise and gradients offer it very little, so the file stays close to its raw size. On a screenshot, a logo or line art the same compression is spectacular. That split — superb on flat colour, wasteful on photographs — is the whole story of when this format is the right one. BMP is gigantic — a 12-megapixel photo is around 36 MB — and no browser treats it as a sane web format.
Why did my transparent background turn white in the BMP?

Because BMP has no alpha channel to keep it in. Every pixel has to be a solid colour, so transparency is composited against a background — white by default — the moment the file is written. Nothing is recoverable afterwards. If the image needs to sit on a coloured page or over a photograph, convert to a format that stores transparency instead.
Is BMP the right format for screenshots and line art?

Yes, for exactly the reason it is the wrong one for photographs. Interface chrome, text and hard-edged graphics are large areas of identical colour with sharp boundaries, which lossless compression handles efficiently and lossy compression smears — the tell is the faint halo that appears around lettering once a screenshot has been through a photographic encoder. Keep screenshots here and convert only when something downstream insists.
Should I still be saving new files as BMP?

Only if something downstream demands it. The format still opens, and there is no urgency about converting an archive that is not causing trouble, but it is no longer where the tooling or the efficiency is going. For anything new, a current format costs nothing extra and avoids the next round of this question a few years from now.
Does it matter that BMP is over thirty years old?

Age itself is not the problem — several formats from that era are still perfectly good, precisely because everything has had decades to implement them. What matters is what the era assumed: small files, modest processors, no network, and features nobody needed yet. Where those assumptions still fit, the format is fine. Where they do not, that is the reason to convert. BMP is the Windows Bitmap, the raw raster format built into Windows since 1985.
Is BMP a Microsoft format I need Microsoft software for?

It came out of Microsoft, and that is where the connection ends. There is no originating application to be missing and no licence to hold: the layout was published, it is about as simple as a file format gets, and every operating system and toolkit has read and written it for decades. What you convert it for is size and features, never access.
Why does a BMP not display in my browser?

Because browsers implement a short list of image formats and BMP is outside it — it belongs to a scanning, print or editing workflow rather than to the web. The file is not damaged; it simply has no decoder in the page. Converting to a web-native image format is a one-step fix and normally makes the file substantially smaller as well.
Can I just rename the extension instead of converting BMP?

Almost never, and it is worth understanding why: the extension is a label, while the bytes inside are structured for one specific format. Renaming produces a file whose name promises something its contents do not deliver, and whatever opens it either refuses the file or misreads it. The one narrow exception is two formats that are genuinely the same container under different names — and even then a proper rewrap is safer than a rename.
Can I convert a whole folder of BMP files in one go?
